Illinois American Water purchases wastewater system

US-based Illinois American Water has announced the acquisition of the Village of Shiloh wastewater system in a deal valued at $3.6m.

With the acquisition, the company is adding about 1,515 wastewater customers to its southern Illinois service area.

They include customers who are directly served by Illinois American Water as well as those served through a mobile home park account.

Last year, the Village of Shiloh voted in favour of the sale, which recently secured approval from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).

The sale of the wastewater system represents the third acquisition by Illinois American Water this year.

Illinois American Water president Justin Ladner said: “Over the last two years, we’ve added more than 35,000 new customers through system acquisitions. Some of the communities were facing EPA consent decrees or water quality issues.

“Other systems had varying priorities or fiscal challenges and wanted to turn over operations to the experts. Every community is unique and we’re proud to partner with them.”

Village Mayor James Vernier said that the sale allows it to focus on other priorities.

Illinois American Water plans to invest in the wastewater system. The investment will be used to carry out improvements to both the Church and Archview lift stations.

Illinois American Water Operations director Karen Cooper said: “We are excited to expand our service in Shiloh. Providing quality, reliable service and doing so safely is our priority. We appreciate the Village’s trust and confidence in our team.”

Illinois American Water is a subsidiary of American Water and provides quality water and wastewater services to about 1.3 million people.
