Morocco commissions wastewater treatment plant built by Biwater

Aourir, a town in Morocco, has commissioned new wastewater treatment plant that was built by British firm Biwater.

The plant will currently serve 60,000 local residents and hotels. It has been designed in a way to accommodate future requirements up to 2030 and a total treatment capacity of 19 million litres per day (MLD).

Located facing the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Aourir is a destination for tourists.  Due to expanding local population and a thriving tourist industry, the town needed a wastewater treatment facility that could meet the present and future requirements.

The town is witnessing growth as several new hotel chains and resorts are being constructed and several more projects are being earmarked for future.

This plant is located close to surf spots and areas under development. The primary aims of the wastewater project are odour control and tertiary treatment of wastewater for reuse.

The facility will provide reused water for green planted areas in the town such as hotels, golf courses, etc. 

Biwater Country Manager for Morocco Yassine Laib said: “This project sets a new benchmark for Morocco, providing a turnkey wastewater and reuse solution. It has been built in a beautiful town, and as a plant it also looks impressive and in keeping with its surroundings.

“The water from the plant exceeds treatment quality standards, ensuring that surfers and swimmers on the beaches alongside are not impacted.”

Last month, the British firm secured a $152m contract from Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation to renovate and improve  water supply infrastructure to address the scarcity of potable water in the country.

As per the contract, the company will design, build or renovate infrastructures in 14 locations to improve capacities in water production, storage and distribution.

The company will also be responsible for a water asset management programme, under which it will provide training and skills transfer to strengthen network efficiencies.
