Construction begins on new Annapolis water treatment plant

Massachusetts-based consulting, engineering and construction firm CDM Smith and Florida design-build company Haskell have secured a contract to build a new $35m water treatment plant in Annapolis, Maryland, US.

The new facility will supply around eight million gallons of potable water a day. It includes media filtration and will have LEED certification.

It will be built adjacent to the existing Annapolis water treatment plant which was constructed in 1929 and is facing various mechanical, structural and electrical problems.

The new plant will draw water from the Magothy, Lower Patapsco and Upper Patapsco aquifers. It will be constructed while maintaining service and is expected to be operational by December 2015.

Annapolis supplies water to around 36,000 residents, as well as the Naval Academy and St John’s College. The city will finance the new project through a $28.5m low-interest state loan, a $1.5m state green-technology grant and $5m in city bonds.
