Brazilian state to invest $2.2bn for water and sanitation projects

Brazilian State Rio Grande do Sul’s government is planning to invest R$3.8bn ($2.2bn) in potable water and sanitation projects by 2016.

State water utility Corsan will carry out the projects over four years from 2012, reports Bnamericas.

The national development bank BNDES will provide R$600m ($341.8m) and the federal savings bank Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF) will provide R$500m ($284.8m) for the projects.

The state government, Corsan officials and CEF will sign an agreement by end of this year for the release of funds under the second phase of the growth acceleration plan of the country.

The main goal of Corsan is to increase wastewater collection and treatment coverage in the 322 municipalities.
