Brno city in Czech Republic extends sewage treatment contract with BVK

Brnenské vodárny a kanalizace (BVK), joint venture between French utility Suez Environnement and Brno city in Czech Republic has been awarded ten year contract extension to operate the sewage network in the Czech city.
Effective from 2016, the contract is worth around €320m.

It is an extension of a previous water and wastewater management contract awarded by the city authorities in 1999.

Brno had recorded 29 million m³ of water distribution to meet its demands in the previous year. The city receives its high quality water supplies from three sources, namely Brezova I, Brezova II and VOV.

The water company operates around 1380 km of water supply networks and 1200 km of sewage networks in the city. It is responsible for managing operations for water and/or sewage infrastructure in 16 municipalities surrounding the city as well.

BVK also looks after the operations at the Modrice waste water treatment plant, which has a capacity to offer its services for 510,000 inhabitants in the city and around it. The facility had treated over 36 million m³ of waste water in 2014.

Suez Environnement CEO Jean-Louis Chaussade said: "This new ten-year agreement to operate sewerage in the city of Brno shows the trust the municipality have placed in the partnership with the group.

"Czech Republic is also the heart of the Group’s development activities in the field of water management in Central Europe."
