Delhi starts trial for 20 MGD wastewater treatment plant

Water authority for Delhi, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated trial run for the recently developed wastewater treatment facility at Pappankalan.

A DJB senior official was cited by the Press Trust of India as saying that DJB is in the process of commissioning the newly constructed facility, which will have a capacity for 20 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) once operational.

Construction of the plant had involved an investment of Rs2.4bn ($37.8m).

It has been planned to trap the sewage coming from Palam and TD-II drain and treating those prior to their discharge into the Najafgarh drain.

The sewerage facility will benefit around 900,000 people in and around the Indian capital territory and will reduce pollution of the Yamuna river.

Technology deployed at the plant involves the use of environment-friendly high rate clarifiers, along with combined biologically flooded filters. The facility uses activated sludge process with tertiary treatment for purifying the sewage.

The facility will also generate bio-gas which will suffice for 50% of its power requirements.

A PLC based software (SCADA) system will be used for operations of the automation system at the facility. Presently, only the sewage treatment unit has been commissioned at the facility.

Other units aimed at sludge digestion, power generation and conversion of sludge into manure are likely to be commissioned by the end of the year.
