GE to provide advanced water treatment technology for water purification plant in Italy

US-based General Electric (GE) has secured a contract with Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti to provide its advanced water treatment technology for an under-construction water purification plant in Ravenna, Italy.

Romagna Acque, a public company is responsible for supplying water to Italy’s Romagna region.

Under the contract, GE will provide its ZeeWeed 500 technology for the water purification plant situated on the east coast of Italy, close to the Adriatic Sea and part of the Mediterranean Sea.

GE ZeeWeed 500 technology is an advanced filtration technology that separates particles, bacteria and viruses from water or wastewater.

The company will provide its technology to the engineering, procurement and construction joint venture of the project between Torricelli and Degrémont.

The plant is being constructed to ensure increased and reliable potable water supply for the residents and tourists in the region.

Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti selected GE’s membrane technology due to its ability to convert deteriorated raw source water into high-quality and safe drinking water.

Upon completion, the plant is expected to treat an average flow of 95 million litres per day of water, which is sufficient to serve about 400,000 people.

The region suffers from long periods of drought and has to depend mostly on Po River as its drinking water source.

The water from the river contains high range of solids and turbidity especially after rain.

Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti CEO Andrea Gambi said the region’s economy depends on its industrial assets and on seasonal tourists.

"Safe and reliable drinking water is essential to ensuring visitors continue to patronize the Romagna region," Gambi added.

"We had been experiencing water shortages and needed to add to our reliable supply of water. Building a new drinking water plant with GE’s ZeeWeed technology is the key to turning the river into a safe and dependable source of potable water."
