Irish Water to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure for Kilkenny County

Ireland’s national water utility Irish Water in partnership with Kilkenny County Council will invest more than €21m to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure in Kilkenny.

The investment is expected to ensure reliable drinking water supply for the people and businesses in the Irish county.

The upgrades will also be done to protect the area’s natural environment and will be in compliance with the discharge licensing standards.

It is expected to meet the existing and future water demands in the developing region.

Upgrades to the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme will involve planned construction of Outrath Reservoir, renovation of the water treatment facilities at Troyswood Water Treatment Plant and betterment of network interconnectivity to the Radestown supply area.

Investments will also be made for upgrades to the Inistioge Water Supply Scheme, Clonassy Water Treatment Plant on the Mooncoin Regional Water Supply Scheme and replacement of watermains.

The partners are also likely to invest for upgrading wastewater infrastructure to protect local environment.

Besides repairing and improving the treatment facilities in Castlecomer, Urlingford and Stoneyford, the partners will set up a new pumping station at the River Dinin Crossing in Castlecomer.

New wastewater treatment facilities will be built under the initiative in Freshford, Johnstown and Goresbridge, which will meet the Waste Water Discharge Licence requirements issued by the EPA.

Irish Water regional information officer for Southern Region Aisling Buckley said; "We are delighted to have works underway or in scope to bring much needed improvements to the water and wastewater infrastructure serving the businesses and communities of Kilkenny.

"Addressing the serious deficiencies that exist across the network is essential so that families and businesses receive a water service that supports their current and future needs."
