Obayashi wins contract for Laos hydropower project

Japanese construction company Obayashi will provide civil engineering works for the 288MW Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower Project in Laos.

The project was launched by Nam Ngiep 1 Power, which includes three sponsors: KPIC Netherlands, EGAT International and Lao Holding State Enterprise.

Under the contract, Obayashi will build concrete gravity dams and power stations on the Nam Ngiep River.

The main dam will be 148m in height, 530m length at the top, and the volume of the body is approximately 2 million cubic metres.

The project will have two power stations. One will generate 270MW, while the other will generate 18MW.

Obayashi is responsible for construction of the power station, main dam body, road, and more.

Preparatory work will be executed from 2013 to 2015. This includes work on the road, river diversion, excavation for the dam foundations and temporary facilities.

Concrete placement of the main dam body will commence in 2016. Power generation is scheduled to begin in January 2019.
