Pennsylvania American Water completes water and wastewater system acquisitions

Pennsylvania American Water has completed three acquisitions to enhance its water and wastewater system range for a total of $6.9m.

The company has purchased the assets of water and wastewater systems serving a total of around 2,100 people.

It purchased the Clean Treatment Sewage Company in Delaware Township that caters to nearly 1,000 residents in the Marcel Lakes Estates development.

The closing of the transaction is the culmination of a May 2012 ruling by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) ordering the company to buy the troubled wastewater operation. It will upgrade the sewer system’s treatment and collection facilities over the coming four years.

Pennsylvania American Water president Kathy Pape said that the PUC recognises the company’s track record in taking over troubled systems and committing the technical expertise and resources needed to bring these operations into regulatory compliance.

"Once we’re able to address the many operational and environmental issues, we look forward to getting permission to lift the moratorium and bring wastewater service to many of the available lots in Marcel Lakes Estates that have been in limbo for years," Pape added.

The company also bought a private water system in the same area serving around 300 residents of the Pocono Mountain Lake Forest Estates development.

In addition, Pennsylvania American Water acquired the assets of the Franklin Township Municipal Sewer Authority in Adams County, which serves around 800 people, along with nearly 24 commercial and municipal customers.

Previously, Pennsylvania America Water announced the acquisition of the municipal wastewater system in Koppel Borough, Beaver County, Indian Rocks Property Owners Association (water) Salem Township, Wayne County, and the Olwen Heights Water Company in Roaring Brook Township, Lackawanna County.
