Sembcorp to build new Chinese water management plant

Sembcorp Industries has unveiled plans to build a water management plant to support Shanxi Lu’an’s one million tonnes per annum coal-to-diesel project in Wangqiao Industrial Park, Changzhi city, Shanxi province.

The plant will provide up to 57,600m³ per day of industrial and potable water, 81,600m³ per day of demineralised water and 984,000m³ per day of cooling water. It will treat up to 24,000m³ per day of high-concentration industrial wastewater and 9,600m³ per day of high-salinity industrial wastewater.

Expected to be completed in phases between late 2014 and 2015, the plant will also have the capacity to reclaim up to 38,400m³ per day of water from treated industrial effluent in order to achieve zero liquid discharge.

Sembcorp’s subsidiary Sembcorp (China) Holding will construct the plant under a 15-year service agreement. It is expected to cost about CNY932m ($152m) and will be managed by Sembcorp Changzhi Water.

The project is in line with Sembcorp’s plans to develop water projects for industries in China, where it intends to offer its solutions to water-stressed regions.

It is the second closed loop total water management development that Sembcorp is developing in China, following its project in the Zhangjiagang Free Trade Port Zone.

Sembcorp Group president and CEO Tang Kin Fei said that apart from serving Shanxi Lu’an’s water requirements, the company will help them to protect the environment and conserve water resources.
