Chile Plans Fresh Water Pipeline Project

Chile is to build a $3.85bn pipeline project that will supply fresh water to its arid northern region in order to stimulate economic development.

The project involves laying a 600 mile undersea pipeline to carry water from the southern resources to the north, which the government believes will be a more cost-effective alternative to investing in desalination.

The pipeline will be anchored to the ocean floor at a variable distance from Chile’s Pacific coast and will be built using submariver technology, which provides greater resistance to rocks and to internal and external pressure changes.

The pipeline is to be built in three phases and completed within five years, according to upi.com.
