Brazilian State Approves Tiete River Clean-Up Project

The Brazilian state of Sao Paulo has approved a $425m project to clean up the Tiete River under phase III of the sanitation project.

Phase III involves building 580km of main sewers, 1,250km of secondary sewerage pipelines and increasing Sao Paulo’s wastewater treatment capacity by 7.4m³ per second.

The total cost of this phase is expected to reach $1.05bn by 2015, according to bnamericas.com.

The project is scheduled to start in 2011 and will be managed by a consortium led by the Brazilian subsidiary of Dutch engineering and consulting company Arcadis.

Sao Paulo has already invested R$1.6bn ($923m) in the first two phases of the project.
