US Unveils Additional Funding for Wastewater Plant

The US Federal Emergency Management Agency has unveiled additional funding of $21m for the elevation of East Bank wastewater treatment plant levee in New Orleans, US, to prevent it from flooding.

The funding will be used to elevate the height of its flood-protecting berm from 8ft to 18ft.

The increase in height is expected to protect the wastewater facility during flooding in case of future disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

The plant is capable of treating 122 million gallons of sewage a day was covered with 16ft of flood water during Hurricane Katrina, taking the plant out of service.

The berm elevation project at the East Bank wastewater treatment plant is expected to be completed by September 2013.
