Peru, Ecuador to Start Puyango-Tumbes Irrigation Project

Peru and Ecuador have awarded two contracts to mark the start of the binational Puyango-Tumbes River irrigation project.

A $79.6m contract was awarded to Consorcio Fronterizo – Construccion y Administracion Hidalgo & Hidalgo for a water resource management feasibility study for the project, as well as final design and implementation.

Another contract worth $5.74m was signed by Consorcio Nippon Koei-Caminosca-Sisa for the supervision and control of the feasibility study.

The project involves the construction of two dams to irrigate 41,500ha of land in the two countries, according to andina.com.

One dam will be constructed in the Peruvian city of Linda Chara to capture 30m³ water per second from the Puyango-Tumbes River and another dam near the Palmales municipality in Ecuador’s Loja province will hold 100m³ of water.
