ADB Finances Sri Lankan Water Project

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to extend a loan of $90m to Sri Lanka to restore the water supply and sanitation infrastructure of the conflict-affected Northern Province.

The loan was extended to the Jaffna and Kilinochchi Water Supply and Sanitation Project, which will help rehabilitate and expand the water and sanitation infrastructure of the Jaffna Peninsula.

The project will improve reservoir headworks and construct water treatment and distribution systems to serve Jaffna and Kilinochchi.

As well as providing household connections, the loan will also be used to build sewage collection and treatment systems in Jaffna.

Out of the total loan, $20m will have a 25-year maturity period while $70m was extended from ADB’s concessional Asian Development Fund with a 32-year term.
