Brazilian State Plans Water Project

The Brazilian state of Alagoas is to tender a R$132m ($80m) project this month for a 30-year public-private partnership to upgrade the water supply system in the city of Arapiraca and its surrounding areas.

The project includes the laying of 95km of pipelines, the installation of two pumping stations and the construction of a potable water plant with the capacity to treat 1,200m³ per hour, counting its water reuse component.

The project aims to increase potable water demand in Arapiraca in the short term and provide water for ten nearby towns in the long term.

By the end of the concession period the water supply system will have the capacity to supply 200l per day to Arapiraca and 167l per day to the surrounding area. It will also upgrade Arapiraca’s distribution network to handle 2,250m³ of water per hour.

The project will reduce water loss in the area from 40% to 25% by 2020, according to waterworld.com.
