US City to Invest $100m in Sewage Improvements

The US city of Keokuk, Iowa, has signed an agreement with the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to improve sewer systems over the next 20 years and reduce sewer discharge into the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

The separation of the combined sewer system is estimated to cost between $60m and $100m.

Under the agreement, Keokuk will submit to EPA and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources a long-term control plan for improving its sewers in order to reduce overflows by December 2012.

Once approved the US city must complete the implementation of the project by December 2030.
