Uruguay to Expand Sanitation Coverage

Uruguay is to invest $80m during 2011 in expanding its sanitation coverage.

The projects will be carried out by the state-owned water utility OSE to increase its sanitation coverage to 90% in the Maldonado Department by 2011.

The investment will also be made in the Canelones Department’s Ciudad de la Costa sanitation plan, which is being carried out with the local municipality and includes a new drainage system and sewerage network, according to waterworld.com.

The water utility also plans to expand potable water and sanitation services in the rural communities of the country’s northern and central areas.

The investment is part of OSE’s five-year investment plan.
