US City Plans $91m Wastewater Plant Relocation

Iowa City, US, is to invest $91m in relocating its north wastewater treatment plant to prevent it from flooding.

Following major flooding in 2008, the city decided to shut the plant and shift its operations to a new facility in the south of the city.

The project will be carried out in two phases with the first phase expected to be operational by April 2014 and the second phase to be carried out 15 years later to create extra capacity, according to easterniowagovernment.com.

The project will be financed with $32.5m in federal funding and $46.7m from state funding. The remaining investment will be sourced locally.
