Brazilian City to Develop Flood-Control Projects

The Brazilian city of Sao Bernardo do Campo is to develop flood-control projects at a cost of R$384m ($230m), according to a city government spokesperson.

The city will spend R$111m ($66m) on controlling the flooding of the Ipiranga River in the Rudge Ramos neighbourhood during periods of heavy rain, according to bnamericas.com.

The work will include building a new water reserve system, renovating two old systems and installing a rainwater pumping station and a water storage tank.

The work also covers the installation of 1,900m of reinforced pipes and building channels.

The city will set aside R$205m ($122m) for flood-control measures at the Lima and Rua Caraiba rivers, R$32.3m ($19m) for Pindorama River and R$35.3m ($21m) for Capuava River.

The projects will benefit about 119,000 households and form part of phase II of the country’s growth acceleration plan.
