EIB Loan to Boost Belgium’s Water Treatment Projects

The European Investment Bank (EIB), the Walloon Government and water management company Societe Publique de Gestion de l’Eau (SPGE) have signed a €200m loan agreement for water treatment projects in Wallonia, Belgium.

The loan will be used to provide Wallonia with efficient water treatment and protection facilities and ensure compliance with EU directives.

SPGE will implement the water management programme because the region has been slow in applying the water management measures as set out in the EU directive on urban wastewater treatment.

With funding from the EIB, the newly opened Namur-Brumagne water treatment plant will improve Wallonia’s water treatment rate from 78% to 81%, with the goal of reaching 95% by the end of 2012.
