Nova Scotia Utility Approves Sewage Plant Upgrade

Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has given the go-ahead to Halifax Regional Water Commission (HRWC) to upgrade the Eastern Passage wastewater treatment plant in Nova Scotia, Canada, in a bid to increase its capacity.

The plant will require $61.8m for upgrade works, $6m of which will be provided by HRWC’s capital cost account for wastewater facilities, while the remaining amount will come from customer water rates.

The existing facility, which serves areas of Eastern Passage and Cole Harbour, was built to meet a capacity of 38,000 customers, and the upgrade will allow the facility to serve a total of 50,000 people.

On completion of the upgrade, HRWC will apply to the review board for a rate of increase to cover the cost.

Federal regulations require wastewater plants in Canada to have a secondary level of treatment for effluent, whereas the existing facility provides only a primary level of treatment, reports thechronicleherald.ca.
