Compesa to Begin Sanitation Project in Brazil

Water utility Compesa is to start a R$109m ($69.8m) sanitation project to improve wastewater collection and treatment in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

The utility has completed basic studies and design plans for the project, and received $21m from the federal government to implement the first-stage works.

Compesa president Roberto Cavalcanti Tavares told bnamericas.com that proposals for the project had opened at the end of June and a contractor will be selected in the coming weeks so that construction can begin.

Compesa will invest R$3.6bn ($2.2bn) in the Pernambuco project until 2014.

Total sanitation investments in the state is expected to reach R$7bn ($4.4bn) over the next four years.
