China to Invest $1.8bn in Tibet Water Projects

China is to invest more than CYN11.6bn ($1.8bn) in constructing irrigation and drinking water projects in Tibet through to 2015.

According to sources from Tibet’s Water Resources Department, the amount will be used for 16 categories of water programmes that cover irrigation, drinking water, flood prevention and control, and hydropower.

On completion, the water projects will enable farmers and herders to access clean drinking water and approximately 90% of the region will have access to electricity.

China allocated CYN3bn in the first half of the year for water projects, reports Xinhua.
