Black & Veatch to Upgrade Melbourne Sludge Plant

Black & Veatch will be a part of the Eastern Tertiary Alliance (ETA) to complete the tertiary upgrade of the Eastern Treatment Plant in Melbourne, Australia.

The A$380m ($344.1m) upgrade to the nation’s largest activated sludge plant will improve treated effluent discharged into the Bass Strait while benefiting the marine environment.

Melbourne Water employed Black & Veatch in 2008 to lead the technology trials team determining the treatment technology to be used for the upgrade.

The technology trials, completed in 2009, concluded that the preferred treatment processes would be ozone and biological media filtration with ultraviolet and chlorine disinfection.

Construction work will begin soon and will be completed in 2012, according to eco-business.com.

Other members of ETA include Melbourne Water, owners of the plant, a joint-venture of construction firm, Baulderstone / UGI and engineering consultant KBR.
