Malaysian Island Implements Blackwater Scheme

The Malaysian island of Labuan will be the first in the country to use sewerage water for industrial operations in a bid to contain the problem of water shortages.

The Petronas Mega Methanol Plant in Rancha-Rancha will use the sewerage water for its cooling tower as it requires 10 million litres of water per day to produce natural gas.

Labuan is currently constructing two pipes for an MYR365m ($112.9m) undersea water pipeline from Beaufort, a town located on Malaysian Borneo, to Labuan to reduce the impact of insufficient water supply.

On completion the pipeline will give the island an additional supply of 42 million litres of water per day, according to bernama.com.

The project is set to be rolled out this year.
