UAE Unveils Advanced Water Recycling Plant

A highly advanced wastewater treatment and recycling plant has been opened at the Al Ghail Industrial Park in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.

It features a 2,000 cubic metres per day membrane bioreactor along with 1,000 cubic metres per day reverse osmosis wastewater recycling and treatment plant.

The plant will recycle wastewater for industrial usage as an alternative to scarce potable water in the Al Ghail Industrial Park, which is under the RAK Investment Authority.

The Government of Ras Al Khaimah, which set up the project, was represented at the opening by the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority, Al Ghurair and Hitachi Plant Technologies.

The project was funded by the Japanese Government’s R&D organisation, new energy and industrial technology development organisation (NEDO) as a research project for the emirate.

NEDO chief representative Takeshi Yoshida said $4.5m has been set aside for the construction of the plant and additional funding of $1m will be made available annually during the three-year period for plant operations.

The sustainable plant reduces energy requirement for water treatment by more than 30% while providing secure water supplies.

The wastewater recycling and treatment process will consistently produce treated effluent suitable for industrial and irrigation purposes, according to wam.org.ae.
