India Funds Drinking Water Project

The Indian Ministry of Urban Development has committed Rs8bn ($171m) over the next five years for a water supply project in the state of Tripura.

The project will construct and improve drinking water facilities and drainage systems in the state, according to uniindia.com.

It will also help deal with the state’s water shortage, the result of river silting and a drop in the groundwater table.

Out of the Rs8bn ($171m), the Indian Government will arrange Rs3bn ($64m) from the Asian Development Bank to support the project.

The Finance Commission of India has already committed Rs2bn ($42m) to improve the drainage system in the state as part of the funding.

The Ministry has already released grant in aid worth Rs2.6bn ($43m) to Tripura for the project.
