Seven Seas Bags Virgin Islands Desalination Contract

The US Virgin Islands has decided to outsource its territory-wide desalination works to Seven Seas Water to cut its annual costs by half.

In 2009, the Virgin Island Water and Power Authority (WAPA) spent $26.5m to process potable water to serve Virgin Island residents.

After the outsourcing deal, Seven Seas will provide water at an annual cost of $11m-$14m, according to virginislandsdailynews.com.

The WAPA uses a system that distills salts and other solids out of water by applying heat, which increases power consumption costs.

Seven Seas will use the less expensive reverse osmosis process to filter seawater into portable water.
