Siemens Commissions MBR Water Testing Facility in Singapore

Siemens Water Technologies has commissioned a membrane bioreactor (MBR) testing facility at Singapore Water Authority’s Changi Water Reclamation Plant.

The newly commissioned plant, which has an MBR system, treats one million litres of domestic wastewater per day.

The unique MBR wastewater treatment process combines an activated sludge biological treatment with a Memcor membrane filtration system by generating rapid pulses at each MBR module using continuous airflow.

The pulsed airlift technology increases water scouring effectively, reducing energy use in the process.

The new system reduces operating and maintenance costs and increases ease of use because there are no moving parts in the membrane air-scouring process.

The system was developed by a collaboration between Siemens Water Technologies and Singapore’s Institute of High Performance Computing.

The system will be commercially available in 2011 after extensive testing at the Changi plant.
