Uganda Allocates $20m for Urban Water Improvement

The Government of Uganda has allocated UGX47bn ($20.3m) for the construction and rehabilitation of the wastewater treatment facilities at Ggaba and Kirinya in Jinja.

The funding will help improve water quality in the Lake Victoria catchment areas. The lake is under threat from pollution from the major urban centres of Kampala, Mukono, Mpigi and Wakiso.

The project also includes restoring wetlands and joining the monitoring effort by the five East African countries to harmonise laws and policies as well as to share information on good use of the lake.

The Ugandan Government has earmarked UGX25bn ($10m) for the restoration of wetlands, according to newvision.co.ug
