Morocco Invests in Drinking Water Project

Morocco invested $422m in 2009 to improve drinking water facilities in the country, bringing drinking water coverage to 89% in rural areas.

The country has constructed five new treatment plants, one desalination plant and two demineralisation plants, increasing the water flow by 1,706l per second.

The African country built 240km of supply mains, 23 new water tanks with a capacity of 14,200m³ and extended the supply network by 400km.

Morocco’s state-owned drinking water facility (ONEP) also operated a 308km wastewater collection system and three wastewater plants treating 11,026m³ per day.

The improvements in the drinking water facilities will benefit an additional 246,000 people as well as 120,000 people in 24 centres, according to globalarabnetwork.com.
