KBR Consortium to Build Melbourne Wastewater Plant

A consortium led by KBR was awarded a $330m contract to build an advanced tertiary wastewater treatment plant in Melbourne, Australia.

The Eastern Tertiary Alliance, which includes Melbourne Water, KBR, Black & Veatch, Baulderstone and UGL Infrastructure, will build the plant with the capacity to treat 380 megalitres of water per day, peaking at around 700 megalitres.

The plant currently treats 40% of Melbourne’s sewage and will use ozone and biological media filtration to reduce colours, odours and suspended solids, followed by secondary ozonation.

The plant will also use ultraviolet radiation and chlorine to disinfect wastewater for non-drinking purposes and ensure that treated water is discharged into the Bass Strait.

KBR will provide engineering design, documentation, environmental services and the project will be completed in 2012.
