Maryland University Develops Pollution-Reduction Technology

Researchers at the University of Maryland, US, have developed a technology that will significantly reduce urban runoff.

The next-generation, low-impact development technology will improve the removal of phosphorus, nitrogen and other prime urban pollutants from runoff.

As part of the experimentation, the researchers have re-engineered bio-retention projects in laboratories, known as rain gardens, consisting of special strips of greenery that capture and filter storm runoff before it enters the watershed.

The university, in partnership with Price George’s County, will demonstrate the effectiveness of the new technology by improving the capture and treatment of runoff.
