Brazil Starts Tiete Water Project

Brazil has begun work on phase III of the Tiete river sanitation project in the state of Sao Paulo, which is being implemented at a cost of $1.05bn.

Work includes building 580km of main sewers, 1,250km of secondary sewerage pipelines and boosting the area’s wastewater treatment capacity by 7.4m³ per second.

The Inter-American Development Bank is funding $600m to the project while Sao Paulo state water utility Sabesp will invest an additional $200m with the remaining money coming from other sources.

The project, managed by a consortium led by the Brazilian subsidiary of Dutch engineering and consulting company Arcadis, is scheduled for completion in 2016, according to waterworld.com.
