Agbar to Construct Chilean Desalination Plant

The Chilean subsidiary of Spanish water group Agbar is planning to build two water desalination plants to serve the mining industry in northern Chile.

The water utility had earlier unveiled its plan to invest $254m in a desalination plant in Copiapo, where decreasing levels of groundwater is creating problems for mining companies.

Agbar’s proposed Copiapo plant is projected to treat 1,000l per second of water, according to bnamericas.com.

Chile’s national environment authority, Conama, is expected to give its decision on the desalination project in November this year.
