ADB to provide loan for Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley wastewater management project

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement with the Government of Nepal to provide a loan of NPR7.57bn ($80m) to support the implementation of the Kathmandu Valley wastewater management project (KVWMP).

The KVWMP is designed to improve wastewater services and optimise the efficiency of the existing wastewater infrastructure in the region.

The Nepal Ministry of Urban Development will execute the project, while Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani (KUKL) and Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board will implement the programme.

The project also aims to improve, restore, establish, and extend wastewater services in KUKL-serving areas, in order to enhance the water quality in urban rivers, tributaries and ecosystems.

The project, expected to improve the health of inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, aims to be completed by the end of 2018.

Nepal Ministry of Finance joint secretary Madhu Kumar Marasini signed the loan agreement alongside Asian Development Bank Nepal country director Kenichi Yokoyama.

In September 2011, the bank provided an $80m loan to Nepal for the Kathmandu Valley water supply improvement project.

Under the project, the country expanded its piped water access to households, reduced water losses in the distribution system and raised the financial and asset management capabilities of agencies overseeing the sector.
