Amiad to provide water filtration technology to Calgon Carbon

Amiad has signed an agreement with Calgon Carbon Corp to supply water filtration technology for the treatment of ballast water.

Under the terms of the agreement, Amiad will provide its Arkal automatic self-cleaning disc filtration technology for use as a component of Calgon Carbon’s Hyde Guardian ballast water treatment systems.

The technology will be used on both new ship builds as well as to retrofit existing ships, and will be applied to US and international carriers.

The non-exclusive agreement, which was signed between Amiad USA, a subsidiary of Amiad, and Hyde Marine, a subsidiary of Calgon Carbon Corp, has a minimum period of ten years.

Calgon Carbon Americas senior vice president James Sullivan said the agreement will ensure that the company has a guaranteed supply of pre-treatment water filtration systems which, it believes, are technically superior to other systems currently used to treat ballast water.

"Arkal’s disc filtration technology will perform a vital function within our system. Also, with this partnership, we will be able to leverage Amiad’s expertise to work together in developing other innovative solutions to protect the marine environment from invasive species that are transported by ballast water," Sullivan said.
