Aqua-Chem secures contract for SWRO plant in the Caribbean

US-based water treatment services provider Aqua-Chem has been awarded its fourth contract by the government of Turks and Caicos Islands to supply and install a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant in the British West Indies, Caribbean.

The value of the contract for the 1,136m³ (300,000 US gallons) per day SWRO was not disclosed.

Under the contract, Aqua-Chem will provide its process design and energy recovery technology to help reduce the plant’s lifecycle costs and also to ease maintenance of the facility.

Aqua-Chem president and CEO David J Gensterblum said the government of Turks and Caicos Islands has shown confidence in the company by awarding the contract.

"The nearly 20-year-duration of our involvement in supporting the Turks and Caicos’ vital SWRO infrastructure is a testament to the Government’s willingness to address the water needs of residents and visitors alike," Gensterblum added.

Turks and Caicos Islands Governor Damian Roderic Todd said, "Aqua-Chem’s technology and service has proven itself well over nearly two decades of operation."

Aqua-Chem will carry out the project in joint venture partnership with Bahamas-based micro utilities developer Matrix Enviro.

The SWRO plant is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2013.

Aqua-Chem was previously selected for three other facilities in the year 1994, 1997, and 2001 to develop facilities with production capacities of 20,000 US gallons per day, 75,000 US gallons per day and 150,000 US gallons per day respectively.
