ARCADIS receives wastewater management contract from Nassau County

Engineering and consultancy firm ARCADIS has received a three-year €30m wastewater management contract from the Nassau County Department of Public Works in New York State, for wastewater plants destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

ARCADIS and its joint venture (JV) partner Hazen and Sawyer were selected to provide consulting, preliminary design, pre-construction, construction and post-construction services to mitigate the effects of future storms across five wastewater plants and over 30 pump stations within the Nassau wastewater system.

The contract also includes extreme weather hardening, designed to endure a storm event with a 500-year return period.

Already on-site when the storm hit, ARCADIS and its JV partner worked with the recovery and repair teams non-stop in the six weeks following the storm to assess damage to major electrical systems, pumping facilities and processes which were flooded and partially submerged in salt water.

By 14 December 2012, the team had met all of its milestones for emergency actions and had successfully restored the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant to full secondary treatment capacity.

The total cost of the Sandy recovery programme is $2bn, including emergency response and repair work performed immediately after the storm.
