Bedford Pumps to supply pumps to clean up Yorkshire coast in UK

UK-based large submersible and conventional pumps manufacturer Bedford Pumps has secured a contract from Yorkshire Water, to supply pumps for the Yorkshire Coast cleanup programme in England.

The value of the contract is £2m ($3m).

Yorkshire Water, a UK-based water supply and treatment utility company, is investing £110m ($167.8m) to ensure that beaches and bathing waters are in accordance with a new European Bathing Water Directive, which is expected to come into force in 2015.

The water utility will employ Bedford pumps at three of its pumping stations, located on the coastline of Yorkshire to meet water quality standards and secure coveted Blue Flags for Yorkshire’s beaches.

Yorkshire Water will upgrade two pumping stations with pumps supplied by Bedford.

The Scalby Mills pumping station will be upgraded with four new submersible volute pumpsets of a centrifugal mixed flow, while the
Toll House Pumping Station will be improved with three new suspended bowl pumps.

The new and third Belgrave Road pumping station will be constructed on the promenade at South Beach in Bridlington.

The plant has been designed to pump excess storm water during heavy rainfall and high tides over 1km out to sea.

As part of the coastline cleanup programme, the town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire will receive £40m ($61m) funds to enhance storage capacity, transfer and treat storm water, and reduce risk of untreated water entering into the sea during monsoon.
