Bluewater wins nutrient removal contract for Hartbeesfontein wastewater plant, South Africa

UK-based water and wastewater treatment technologies provider, Bluewater Bio International (BwB), has secured a contract to provide its nutrient removal technology, HYBACS, for the Hartbeesfontein wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in South Africa.

The WWTP facility is owned and operated by the city of Matlosana local municipality in North West Province.

BwB secured the WWTP upgrade project valued at ZAR24m (£1.75m) through its licensing agreement with Headstream Water Holdings.

The HYBACS technology upgrade has been designed to increase the plant’s capacity from 4 to 8 megalitres per day, which is an uplift of about 60,000 population equivalent.

Under the first phase of the project, which is already under construction, BwB will deploy six SMART units to power the HYBACS process.

Bluewater Bio International founder and CEO Daniel Ishag said the company has secured its third order for HYBACS technology for the Hartbeesfontein wastewater treatment plant.

"With many regions of Africa in urgent need of wastewater upgrades and extensions, Bluewater Bio’s solution, with its superior economics and energy savings compared to conventional activated sludge, is ideally placed to serve this crucial social and political need," Ishag added.

Moedi Consulting Engineers, on behalf of the Matlosana municipality at Hartbeesfontein, contracted BwB for its HYBACS technology, which has already been deployed at the Botleng and Swartruggens projects.

Water treatment at the plants is of high quality, and the technology has also reduced maintenance cost and electricity consumption.
