Canada and Saskatchewan governments to develop water treatment plant in Watrous

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have announced plans for investment to jointly upgrade the water treatment plant in Watrous town.

Both governments are planning to invest $447,333 to develop the project, and the remaining balance will be contributed by the town, which is expected to be $1,342,000.

The upgrades include the development of a reverse osmosis system, which is expected to reduce interruptions.

The improvements are also expected to minimise the downtime for repairs, by improving the reliability of the system, as well as reduced repair costs to residents of the town, relating to water heaters and corrosion of fixtures.

The improved water quality is likely to help attract potential residents to the town, while the project is conditionally approved, pending clearance of an environmental review.

Minister of state for western economic diversification and Arm River-Watrous MLA Greg Brkich said that the multiple levels of government are partnering to construct a better Saskatchewan.

"The Government of Saskatchewan recognises how important infrastructure investments are to the quality of life for communities," Brkich added.

The Government of Canada has developed many water treatment projects around the west, with contributions from the western provinces.

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have invested $210m in around 150 projects since 2007, under BCF-CC.

Watrous Mayor Ed Collins said that the funding assistance from the federal and provincial governments will allow the town to advance the vital infrastructure project.

"We certainly appreciate their support and, with improved water quality, our community will continue to grow and prosper," Collins added.
