Consolidated Water to expand water operations in the Bahamas

Consolidated Water Co and the New Providence Development Company (NPDC) have formed a joint venture (JV) to expand retail water operations in Bahamas.

The JV will own and operate a retail water utility that will provide potable water to the areas including Lyford Cay and Old Fort Bay.

Consolidated Water will spend BS$7m($6.98m) on a 50% ownership stake in the JV, while NPDC is transferring its existing retail water utility business to the JV for the remaining percentage.

Consolidated Water CEO, Rick McTaggart, said the company’s expertise combined with NPDC’s operating experience will enable the JV to deliver portable water supply for customers on the western end of New Providence Island.

"We expect to close this transaction on or before 30 June, 2012, after which we will commence construction of the new plant improvements," McTaggart said.

NPDC’s existing retail water utility business currently collects groundwater from around 1,700 acres of land, treats that groundwater and distributes potable water to around 1,000 customers.

Consolidated Water will provide management and engineering services for the JV, including the construction of the new water treatment plant that incorporates ultra-filtration, brackish water reverse osmosis (RO) and seawater RO technologies.

Construction of the water plant is scheduled for completion at the end of 2012.
