Consortium to build water pump facilities for storm and rain water management in Louisiana

A consortium led by Canada-based professional consulting services firm Stantec has won a contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers to design and build three permanent canal closures and pumps (PCCP) facilities in New Orleans, Louisiana, US.

The company will head the joint venture (JV) as the lead design engineer and architect, as part of the $614.8m contract.

Stantec will provide a whole range of integrated design services for the PCCP facilities, which will be constructed near Lake Pontchartrain in Orleans Avenue, and London Avenue Outfall Canals in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The PCCP project is expected to provide the US Army Corps with a long-term and sustainable measure to reduce the risks possible from heavy tropical rainfalls and the 100-year storm surge event.

Stormwater risk reduction is currently being provided by interim closure structures and pumps that were installed post-hurricane Katrina.

The three new permanent facilities together will form a drainage pumping station that will operate continuously and independently during major hurricane events.

Stantec vice president and project design director R L Mullins said, "We have a strong track record of designing significant drainage pump stations and we are excited to be part of this critical project for the greater New Orleans area hurricane and storm damage risk reduction system."

As part of the contract, Stantec will provide a range of design services, including architecture, civil, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, design, project management and construction support to the JV.

The construction of the PCCP project is expected to commence in the final quarter of 2013 and take about 44 months to complete.
