Construction to begin on £60m water treatment works in Plymouth, UK

Construction is expected to start next month on a £60m water treatment works in Roborough, north of Plymouth, England.

UK-based firm South West Water has announced the major contractors who would carry out designing and construction of the new works.

Scheduled to be complete by 2017 and operational in September 2018, the new and upgraded water treatment works will replace the existing but outdated treatment works set-up at Crownhill in Plymouth in the 1950s.

Construction work is expected to create approximately 150 new job opportunities in the region.

The new works will use the latest treatment process designed and developed by the Netherlands-based water technology company PWN Technologies.

The process was tested at a prototype facility at Crownhill from June 2013 to June 2015. The new technology features inline coagulation (ILCA), suspended ion exchange (SIX) and ceramic membrane microfiltration (CeraMac).

South West Water senior project manager Mike Court said: "The new treatment works will meet the needs of Plymouth’s growing population and provide a secure, high-quality drinking water supply for the wider Plymouth area for generations to come."

Among the major contractors, PWN Technologies will oversee design, installation and commissioning of the main water treatment process, while design and consultancy firm Arcadis and consulting engineers Pell Frischmann are the main design contractors.

Infrastructure company Balfour Beatty, in collaboration with Interserve, has been selected as the main construction contractor.

The two firms will undertake construction of all infrastructure, buildings and pipelines for the new water treatment works.
