DEWA awards SCADA system project to monitor water network in Dubai

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded an AED14m ($3.8m) contract to supply and commission supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to remotely monitor and control all the data of the main water network in the city.

Under the project, DEWA will provide uninterrupted and stable water supply and contribute towards social, economic and environmental development of the city.

The SCADA system is anticipated to improve the operational efficiency of the utility by monitoring the water network and controlling it through automatic valves or through direct orders from operators.

In addition, the system will help the utility identify and repair water leakages quickly and reduce unaccounted-for water losses in the main transmission network.

The project is expected to enhance the efficiency of water transmission network and increase reliability of water supplies to different areas of Dubai.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said the project comprised modern technologies, programmes and a hydraulic model of the main water network in Dubai.

"The project also comprises a programme to train technicians in managing the system at the highest level of efficiency," Al Tayer added.

Al Tayer also stated that the project aimed to increase operational efficiency of the main water network to meet the increasing growth and demand for water and reduce water loss throughout Dubai.

The SCADA system project is scheduled to be complete in 15 months.
