GENIVAR to begin first phase of Canadian sewer separation project

GENIVAR is expected to commence construction of the first phase of the Spring Park combined sewer separation project in the city of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada by July 2012, the company has announced.

The Canadian firm secured the consulting engineering services portion of the sewer separation project worth $18m on 10 April this year from the City of Charlottetown.

The Spring Park combined sewer separation project is designed to resolve the operational and environmental issues associated with combined sewer overflows.

Site surveying of the first phase was initiated early this month and the design phase is set to follow.

The City of Charlottetown mayor Clifford Lee said the project has been an important collaboration between the City and the PEI Provincial Government.

"We look forward to the Federal Government joining the project with their anticipated 2014 infrastructure programme, to help fund this project through to completion," Lee said.

The Water & Sewer Committee Councillor Edward Rice said the sewer project will update the City’s sewer system and improve water quality in Charlottetown Harbour.

"The hard work of many of our staff and administration have made this stage of planning possible and we are confident that GENIVAR Inc. will carry the project forward in a timely and professional manner," Rice said.

The sewer project will be carried out in four phases over a three-year period.
