Georgia, US, awards funds to improve reservoirs and water supply

Georgia Environmental Finance Authority in the US has disbursed about $100m for building new reservoirs and water supply projects across state.

The award is part of the state’s four-year plan to spend $300m on projects expected to enhance the state’s home-grown water supply, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The funds to be disbursed will be in the mostly be in the form of loans to local governments and agencies, and will require repayment.

Eight of the 15 projects submitted for consideration, most of them located in Northern Georgia, will be funded for planning and building reservoirs or wells.

The agency awarded $90.4m in loans, with an additional $9m in direct state investment money.

Georgia Environmental Finance Authority executive director Kevin Clark is reported to have said that the reservoir projects aren’t ready for direct funding and therefore the state will award loans for their construction.

All options are on the table, including water reuse and desalinisation projects, however, reservoirs and wells made the first cut for funding, added Clark.

The second round of the funding is expected to be given out in early 2013.
